What Barclays Premier League is all about
I couldn’t agree more with what Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff said about Man Utd, and English football generally.
‘They run a lot. Their style of football, and that of all the English teams, gives the false sensation that they run more than anyone. ‘That’s because despite having a majority of foreigners in their squads they maintain the philosophy of long-ball football and sprinting 60 yards. ‘That is how they exploit spaces in front of the midfield. If they played in the other team’s half more often those spaces wouldn’t exist. ‘Despite recognising their effort, you can disarm an English side that presses and looks for the long ball by keeping possession and moving the ball around quickly. ‘And if you know they will expend all their energy on closing down and chasing long balls, then you know where to beat them: by playing the ball horizontally.
‘However badly Barca is doing we have at least the same chance of progressing to the final as United. ‘They are very good, that’s true. Of the three English teams in the semis, for me Manchester is the best. ‘But I’m absolutely convinced that they’re thinking exactly the same about Barca. That of all the semi-finalists, the Blaugranes are the strongest.’
This comment actually also explain why the atmosphere at Barclays Premier League is second to none. BPL fans are among the most vocal fans among the European Leagues. This is because of the false sensation that they run more, which imply that they try very hard to win, showing a strong will to win. This in return, inspire the fans to give them their full support as well by being vocal.
The Best of Serie A: Juventus vs Milan
This week Serie A rules, because two of the famous clubs are playing each other with intense rivalry for glory in the past 2 decades. Juventus vs Milan. Round 73.
Juventus is the most successful club in the Italian football history with a few more to achieve 30 scudettos, and easily the most successful club in Italy for the past 2 decade if not for their part in the "calciopoli" incident back in 2006, which lead to the last 2 scudetto, which they won, scrapped. But some how, Milan always caught the limelight, with their Champion’s League victory in 2003 shadowing Juve’s Scudetto win. They win the Champion’s League again in 2007.
The writing on the wall seems that when it matters, Milan will prevail. And this time it matters as Milan is still chasing Fiorentina for the 4th place. Fiorentina progression in UEFA Cup give Milan hope that, as the fixtures get more pack, Fiorentina will stumble and give Milan the 4th place for the Champion’s League. But now it looks like Milan has already fall to heavy fixtures.
Kakha Kaladze is suspended while Alessandro Nesta is suspended for a two-game ban for his dismissal in the 2-1 defeat by Atalanta two weeks ago. Right back Massimo Oddo recently had knee surgery and left back Marek Jankulovski is injured.
So Milan will have to rely on back-up defenders Giuseppe Favalli, Daniele Bonera and Cafu alongside Paolo Maldini, but their credentials are certainly impressive. Favalli and Maldini are former Azzurri, with Maldini still holding the record as the most capped Italian footballer. Cafu and Bonera are World Cup winners, in 2002 and 2006 respectively. Impressive huh?!
If not for a big club like Milan, these players can easily command 1st team status in most teams. Juve, on the other hand, will also be missing Nedved, who spent a night in hospital in Palermo following a nasty clash of heads in 3-2 defeat at Palermo. That defeat actually ended Juve’s title hope.
So can a eager Milan beat Juve this time around. In recent years, history favours Juve, but history don’t always repeat itself. Ask Liverpool and you will know.
Azzurris in Champion’s League
After the 1st leg of the Champion’s League quaterfinal few days ago, we can look at the team’s result and the performance of the starter and the potential Azzurri on display. A brief review of the result:
AS Roma 0-2 Man UtdFenerbahce 2-1 Chelsea
Schalke 04 0-1 Barcelona
Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
As many Azzurri fans may already notice, there are not much Italians playing outside of Serie A, and if ever they are playing abroad, most likely will not be in EPL, due to the contrasting "nature" of playing style in both country. So when there are 4 EPL teams in this year Champion’s League quaterfinal, the Azzurri playing in is surely to be less. Besides Roma and Barcelona, there are no other Italians in display for other teams (if Carlo Cudicini make a come back to the National team, then Chelsea will have one Italian representative).
He still possess the ability to go forward and help out the attack. There are occasions when I doubt his position, and he nearly score. From a Taddei’s corner, Panucci headed over the top.
Defending:
In the 12th minute of the game, Park Ji-Sung got into a good position only for Christian Panucci to take the ball off his toes as he shaped to shoot. But Man Utd’s 2nd goal is a result of a mix-up between Doni and Panucci with Rooney on hand to knock the ball home. This goal virtually end Roma’s fightback on the night, though they still keep playing attractive football going forward, and at times trouble the Man Utd defence.
Comment:
Panucci still possess the ability to play for the Azzurri, and may well make an impact as he is a versatile who can play in both left and right back.
